Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Casserole
- 1 can (16.3 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough
- 6 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk (for eggs)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until it is browned and crumbled, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Make Roux and Gravy: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the cooked sausage and stir it for about 1 minute to form a roux. Slowly add 2 1/2 cups of whole milk while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Then, add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Continue to cook the mixture until the gravy thickens, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the skillet from heat.
- Prepare Biscuit Base: Cut the refrigerated biscuit dough into quarters. Spread half of these biscuit pieces evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish to form the casserole base.
- Assemble Layers: Pour the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit pieces in the baking dish. In a medium bowl, whisk together the 6 large eggs and 1/4 cup whole milk. Pour this egg mixture over the sausage gravy layer.
- Add Cheese and Top Biscuit Layer: Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the egg mixture. Then, arrange the remaining biscuit pieces evenly over the top of the casserole.
- Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the casserole is fully set in the center.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This helps the casserole firm up for easier serving.
Notes
- Substitute turkey sausage for a lighter version of the casserole.
- Add chopped cooked bacon for extra smoky flavor.
- Use pepper jack cheese instead of cheddar for a spicier kick.
